Standby Electrical Power Through Diesel Backup Generators
Diesel backup generators provide a source of standby electrical power that can be used for many necessary applications, which are important, if and when the regular source of electricity cuts or fails. Generators are for the most part gas or diesel driven and both gasoline and diesel generators can both provide electrical power for many applications. For backup generators performance is not as vital as the generator is not used on a daily basis. However, you do want that source of power to be reliable if you have to use it and for that reason diesel is the recommended option as diesel backup generators will usually last longer than their gasoline counterparts and are more fuel efficient.
Diesel backup generators are not ideal for home use and for residential back up generators, natural gas or propane may very well be the best generator for backup home use. There are some brands out there but all customers should first look at natural gas or propane options for residential backup generators. Backup generators that utilise diesel on average work at a lower RPM and produce more torque at lower speeds thus increasing engine life and making the process far less noisy. There are, however, some negatives to the diesel generators. Unlike gasoline backup generators, which, if well maintained, can have quite a long engine life, diesel backup generators if not used frequently enough, can break quite quickly no matter how well they are maintained.
Both gasoline and diesel need to be stored very carefully, but of the two, gasoline is the more combustible substance and can be ignited by the smallest of static electric sparks. Both generator fuel types produce dangerous fumes including carbon monoxide, which can lead to serious injury or death. In essence, although the diesel generators do need to be handled with care, they are generally safer than the gasoline generators.
In the discussion of cost, there are several factors that need to be considered. First off, diesel powered generators are usually made of more expensive parts that cost more to repair whenever they break down. Diesel generators on average cost nearly three times as much as generic gasoline generators. Diesel fuel costs more that gasoline, but diesel generators consume less fuel than gasoline generators. In the long run, a diesel generator can save more money over a gasoline generator with higher RPM. This savings can be evened out with a lower RPM gasoline generator that is well taken care of.
Diesel backup generators are great ways to keep electrical power running but they are quite expensive for most families. That is why an investment in one is expected to last quite a while. The diesel generator is valuable here since it usually lasts longer than a gasoline generator. Diesel also is less combustible and has a longer shelf life than gasoline which makes it better as a residential generator fuel. However, diesel generators are not as useful as propane or natural gas generators for residential usage.
